We have a chance to stay in St. Johann for a week in late Aug or early Sept. Do you think a week in one place would be a good idea? Where would you go for day trips? We will be using public transportation and like to hike a lot? After the week we will be going to other parts of Germany and then into Italy.

HI I did not stay in St. Johann, but I passed through the area and stayed near Bischofshofen a couple of years ago, and it's a lovely area. Hiking possiblilities are great! I went to Hohenwerfen castle, and would've gone to the Lichtensteinklamm waterfall but there happened to be a village festival on the day, so I stayed for that. I personally love to go to small villages, where accommodations are cheaper, and stay for a few days, as long as a week, because I really don't enjoy cities. The public transportation options are good, St. Johann is on a main rail line, and you can get to both Lichtensteinklamm and Hohenwerfen easily, also Salzburg and Berchtesgaden. I sent for tourist information from the Salzburgerland tourist office, and they sent me LOTS of information and LOTS of listings of places to stay. Good Luck!
