Hi we are driving to Hallstatt and only have one night available to stay. we have been offered accomm either on the edge of the pedestrian area where we can park our car at accomm or right in at the square where we would need to park and shuttle in. The accomm in the centre is more expensive and I am hoping someone can tell me if it is worth paying the extra to stay right in centre or is it suitable to stay on the edge and walk in and out? We are travelling with 5 yr old plus infant.
thanks
Rachel, I'd suggest staying in the centre if your budget will allow, as that will put you closer to restaurants and other activities in the evening and probably better views of the lake. IMO, the walk from the parking area to the centre (near Gasthof Simony and Hotel Grüner Baum) will be longer than five minutes, especially hauling luggage and towing a 5 year old and an infant. I'd suggest using a Shuttle if possible. Happy travels!
I'd stay at the edge of the pedestrian area and walk the 5 or so minutes to the town center. Not all restaurants are located there, and I do not think you'll gain much advantage in terms of entertainment or access to attractions by paying more for your accommodations near the market square.
Thanks everyone, sounds like it isn't very far to walk so we might save the money and stay on the edge I think.
Rachael, It sounds like you have made your decision but to add my two-cents. I think staying on the edge of the pedestrian area will be fine, even with an infant and 5-year-old. We found the walk lovely and easy when we went with our infant a few years ago, although we didn't stay in Hallstatt so we weren't transporting luggage as well.
