Is there any point in going to Hallstatt from Salzburg for two days in mid-November? It seems like the main attractions like the salt mine tour are closed. Would my time be better spent with an extra day in Salzburg or a couple days in Munich? Thanks!!
I will offer the opposite opinion. Lots of people on this board love Hallstatt but I was bored there. To be fair, it rained the two days that I was there. I would have preferred to have spent more time in Munich or Salzburg.
No one can predict the weather, but you might find it to be a nice fall day, you might find snow, or it might rain. It rained when I was there in August, and I still had a good time. The weather forecast for the next few days is calling for mixed rain and snow, and this is in February.
If your main attraction in Hallstatt is the salt mines, and they do appear to be closed, but I doubt that they are in any way unique, perhaps you should cut down to a day, but I'm not sure I would miss it entirely. See the salt mines in Hallein or in Berchtesgaden instead.
Hallstatt itself is a very picturesque town, worth a visit. You can get almost to Hallstatt by train, so weather should not be a problem. If the lake were frozen over, which I seriously doubt, there are buses from Bad Ischl, or from Obertraun just a few km around the end of the lake.
Hi Andrew,
We visited Hallstatt as a day trip in late Oct. '06. It was a perfectly clear, warm fall day by the way. Weather is impossible to predict. While the scenery and the town are extremely picturesque, we too were bored after a few hours. It's very small (can walk the town from end to end in about 15 minutes) and in late Oct., it was extremely quiet... although that's not always a bad thing.
Personally, I'd visit Hallstatt as a day trip.
