Hallstatt in January

We're going to be travelling from munich to salzburg and then into italy for our honeymoon. I was wondering if anyone has been to Hallstatt in january? We're totally fine with just kicking back and hanging out. I'm sure there isn't too much open. But i'm curious about the roads and winter conditions. Any thoughts or comments will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I'm not sure how many places will be open. I'm sure it's slow season in Hallstatt. However, the town itself should be beautiful in winter. Don't worry about the weather. Take the train via Achnang-Puchheim. The trains almost always run. The lake might be frozen over, and the boat from the train station to town not running. Just stay on the train to Obertraun, then take the bus, 2 km, around the south end of the lake to Lahn.

By the way, I envy you. I think Hallstatt in winter, with snow, could be a very romantic setting. You might want to splurge on a hotel in town, on the lake. On the other hand, a hotel south of town, in Lahn, where, ala Frank Lloyd Wright, you could look down the lake at snow covered Hallstatt might be just as impressive. Or even in Obertraun, where you could look across the lake at Hallstatt.

Keep in mind that Hallstatt doesn't get any sun in January, and Obertraun doesn't get much more. The lake rarely freezes, but when it does, it's likely to be in January.

We've been to Hallstatt in early December and going back this December because of the affect it had on us. It was slow, but we don't like crowds anyway. We stayed at an awesome B&B in Obertraun (Haus Hepi)...Just perfect. I'd move there if we could! It was definitely cold and a bit cloudy but it really didn't matter!
