Hallstatt in December?

We will be in Salzburg in early December and have a couple of extra days. Is going to Hallstatt advisable for a couple of days? According to Rick's book some of the restaurants are closed. Does the area shut down for tourists? James

Hi James, Not sure what Hallstatt will be like in early Nov., but had we visited in late Oct. and it was VERY quiet the day we were there. While it is very picturesque, we felt a day was enough time spent there. Hopefully you're aware of the fantastic Christmas/Advent markets in Salzburg, St. Gilgen, etc. during this time of the year. We visited during the markets in 2010 and had an amazing time. http://www.salzburg.info/en/art_culture/advent_new_years_eve/advent_christmas_markets http://www.wolfgangseer-advent.at Paul

James, I'm not sure that a visit to Hallstatt in early December would provide the best "impression" of the town, and at least some of the sights may not be operating at that time of year. It's an incredibly beautiful location at other times in the year. Also keep in mind that it will take about half a day in each direction for travel. You'll need to change trains at Attnang Pucheim, and then take Stefanie across the lake. If you really want to have a quick look at Hallstatt, another option would be to take a day tour from Salzburg. You might send an E-mail to Bob's Special Tours to find out if they offer that tour in December. Happy travels!
