We are wanting to go to Hallstatt this August, near the end of the month. Will it be too crowded to enjoy it at that time?
Are there other similar lake towns we could visit near Munich?

Can't tell you how crowded Hallstatt may or may not be at that time of year. The Alps are dotted with resort towns that sit on lakes, but I'm not aware of any that quite duplicate the scenery of Hallstatt, where the peaks so sharply and dramatically rise off the water.

... since a lot of Europeans take August for their holiday, it seems a good idea to inquire about lodgings available or get your reservations in early. There are quite a few places to room, but we can recommend two from personal experience: Hôtel Grüner Baum and just across the plaza from that hotel is Gasthaus Zauner. Grüner Baum is right on the lake and their room #18 has a balcony overlooking the lake.
