Hallstatt hotels

Has anyone stayed at Gasthof Simony and what was your experience? I've stayed at Pension Sarstein but they are full for the date in June that I need. There are 4 of us and we want a lake view like Sarstein -WOW.

Barb, Yes, I've stayed at Gasthof Simony and had a very enjoyable time, so would certainly recommend it. It's an older Hotel and suitably "creaky" in the true Rick Steves style, but very comfortable. I'm not sure all the rooms have a lake view though - you'll have to enquire. There's another Hotel right beside Gasthof Simony called Hotel Gruner Baum. As I recall, they completed extensive renovations in mid-2008 and added beautiful wooden balconies on the front, facing the lake. It's a bit more "upscale" so you'll have to allow for that in your budget. Happy travels!

The Simony is on the lake but there are no frills. The views are lovely but there was alot of mold in our shower which I found to be a turn off. And breakfast was a little minimal. Another thing to consider is the lakeview rooms are NOT guaranteed. They are on a first come basis. The Gruner Baum is more expensive but it is more upscale than the Simony and you can be sure of getting a lakeview room if one is available. There is also a new hotel in Hallstatt called the Heritage Hotel. Again, they are a little pricey but it looks very nice and it is right on the lake. http://www2.heritagehotel.at/index.php?nl=2

On another Hotel Gruner Baum note, my son and I stayed here in 2009 and absolutely loved it! Our room was spacious and very nicely decorated, and we had a wonderful lakefront view with a large balcony. We really enjoyed our stay, the restaurant, and the charming town. Enjoy!
