Hallstatt, Austria in mid-Nov.

We will visit Salzburg and Hallstatt in mid-Nov. I would like to stay in Hallstatt for 2 night. Should I do this or stay in Salzburg and day-trip to Hallstatt? Jim

Hi Jim,
I'm not sure this will be of help but...we were in Hallstatt last Oct. (day trip from Ramsau, Germany, west of Berchtesgaden). It was rather "quiet" at that time of year. It is an easy drive from Salzburg though. I believe it took us about an hour and a half each way from Ramsau.

Look for my post on here about Hallstatt... there were so many replies. I'm going there in late Oct/early Nov. Most people said one day/one night was plenty of time to see everything there. Also in November many of the attractions in the mountainous areas close for the season (besides ski resorts of course) but apparently there is some kind of mine tour in Hallstatt but it closes down at the end of October.

Hallstatt is very charming and picturesque. One full day and 1 night is good. the drive to Salzburg is easy however I am unsure about temps in Nov.

Hallstatt is just one stop in the quite beautiful Salzkammergut Lake District. Depending on tastes and weather, it is easy to spend even more that two days in the area. *** Salzburg is fully deserving of two days. *** I would have trouble getting the benefit of both in two days. I would choose one or the other, but then I tend to be a slow tourist.

Unless you are planning to do a lot of hiking in the area, 1 night is more than enough.
