There are several B&B's listed in Rick Steves' tour book. Give us an idea of what your budget is. How are you getting there; i.e., train or car?

We have been to Hallstatt twice and have stayed at the Gasthof Simony both times. Our room had a balcony and a view of the lake. As Rick says, it has creaky floors but it is a good place to stay. It is very easy to find. It is at the corner of the town square. If you take the little boat from the train station, go left a few yards. The Simony is on the left next to the ice cream shop. We would go again, for sure!

In 2007 we stayed at the Hotel Herlitz, a family run guesthouse. It was clean and quite in town, but not on the lake. I would stay there again but think it would be great to try for accommodations on the lake first. I pass the name along to give you options if Gasthof Simony is not available.
