Hallstatt and Sound of Music Tour

My mom and I are going to do a day trip from Munich to Salzburg in December. We are wondering about this tour. I see that it is offered by Bob's and Grayline. Has anyone had any experience with either. Mainly my mom wants to know if you actually get out at any of the places or are you just driving by and being told this is such and such. We really aren't that interested in the SOM, but to get to Hallstatt that is the tour to do and some of the places do look nice. Any help would be appreciated. We have to do the tour on Monday because our other days are already booked. Any experiences good or bad would be appreciated. Thank you in advance. Elizabeth

I have done the Bob's SOM tour-the shorter half day tour. You do get out at several places for brief stops, and we had a longer stop for a snack at a nice scenic cafe. The Bob's tour uses smaller vans-at least for the half day tour, but I think also for the longer tours. Some of the other tours use full size buses. I was very happy with the Bob's tour.

Great. Thanks for the info. We might just do the old town and the fortress and then take a bus to Hellbrunn castle. Neither of us are big SOM fans so it's kind of dumb to waste money on a tour. We'll see. I really appreciate the infomation though. That's what my mom was worried about was whether you stopped or just a quick drive by.

Sounds like you are really trying to get to Hellbrunn Palace and not to Hallstatt, which is good since it's over a 4 hr train ride from Munich to Hallstatt. One of the Salzburg city bus lines does stop at Hellbrunn, so that's the way to go.

Well we thought Hallstatt looked pretty, but realized it is a ways from Salzburg and then you have to add in our travel time from Munich. We just need more time, but I guess everybody probably says that!!
