We already purchased our half fare card . I understand that We can start to use it from Basel to wengen and there in Wengen. After 3 days in Wengen, we will proceed to Lucerne for 2 days then to Zurich airport. My question is I should be able to use our Half fare from wengen to lucerne and from ucerne to Zurich, right?
Thanks for your help.
The short answer is yes - you can use the half fare card all these places. We purchased them two years ago and used them everywhere we traveled by train - which was a lot in 14 days.
Did you purchase a half-fare card, or a Swiss Card? The half-fare card simply allows you to purchase tickets on the main rail lines at a 50% price reduction, and on mountain trains and lifts at various reduced percentages. On the other hand, if you bought the Swiss Card, it gives you one free day of travel from your port of entry, in this case Basel, to your destination that day, in this case Wengen, and then reductions as above during the course of your stay. Finally, it allows free travel on the last day to your port of departure, in this case Zuerich Flughafen.
By the way, be sure to take the Brunig Bahn from Interlaken to Luzern, very picturesque, even if slower than the route via Thun and Bern.
Happy Travels,
Kevin
HI Kevin, We got a Half Fare Card . Regarding the picturesque ride from Interlaken to Lucern, do you know how long it takes? Thanks
Sally:
The trip takes two hours either way. One route heads to Bern via Spiez and Thun, changing trains in Bern, and then going to Luzern. The picturesque route goes to Brienz and Meiringen, then over the Brunig Pass and down to Luzern. Just be sure to avoid the train that requires you to change in Olten, it takes 2:30 and goes through a more industrial region. You can check schedules at www.sbb.ch/en search for Interlaken Ost to Luzern.
Guete Reise!
Kevin
