In two weeks I leave for vacation in Germany, including a few days in Munich on my own. Wondering if anyone has particular recommendations about guided walking tours in English ? More interested in history/literature/ architecture than beer garden/drinking tours, but I'd also love a recommendation or two for lunch and dinner meals...preferably something local/authentic and not too fancy or pricey...someplace a single woman of a certain age wouldn't feel uncomfortable. Staying at Hotel Uhland, btw....as often recommended here.
Melissa, I can recommend an organization called Euraide which is located in the main train station in Munich. My sister and I did their City Tour a few years ago and enjoyed it a lot. You can Google them and see the entire array of products and services they offer.
If you go on any of the high quality, daily walking tours offered in Munich, consider asking your guide for restaurant suggestions. You will be sure to get some great ideas, and you might even find some dining companions with the other tour participants. Check Trip Advisor for the listings and up to date reviews for the best walking tours in Munich. Most will cost about 12 euro and will give you a good overview of the city in about 3-4 hours.
Thanks...I'll do that
I'd definitely eat at the Hofbräuhaus, a few blocks NE of Marienplatz. The food is ok, not gourmet, but traditional Bavarian and not overpriced. Plus, the entertainment is as close to Oktoberfest as you'll get without actually being there. No need for Google; Euraide's website is www.euraide.com.
For food, try Augustinerbräu and Donis'l. Augi is just up the street from Maienplatz and Donis'l is right on Marienplatz (when facing the Rathaus, it is on the left.) Also second the Hofbräuhaus.
Funny, I've heard others say to steer clear of the Hofbrauhaus. Their view is that it's full of tourists and you get a better experience, if not any better food, at one of the other beer gardens. Thoughts?
Just my opinion, but I lived in Munich for three years as a kid and have been back 5 times since. We always go the HB and can honestly say I have never had a bad meal. Perhaps to the refined taste of anative the food is not the greatest, but to us who don't experience Munich food every day, I certainly think it is perfectly fine. The atmosphere adds alot, too.
I'm one of the "forget eating at the Hofbrauhaus" people. It's worth a visit for a beer in a famous tourist trap and to see the small museum upstairs. However the food is fine but mediocre compared to well, jeez, just about ANYWHERE else, and value is better elsewhere. It's like eating at a Disneyland cafeteria. Augustiner is always a good bet. They have locations in the mitte that are more touristy, I really prefer the atmosphere and food best at the location a few blocks from the train station. It's a bit of a walk, but you can take a tram halfway there from the Hbf. The Viktualienmarkt is a great place to get very reasonably priced food if the weather is great. Just browse the stalls and go for what looks good. Since you'll be there for a few days, you may get sick of heavy Bavarian fare, if so, Munich is a great place to get some more international food as well.
