Hi, My adult daughter and I will be visiting southern Spain during the latter part of December, 2013. I would like to find a guide for the Albayzin and its Mosque. I feel it would be an opportunity to learn about the Muslim's community and history of that area. Any leads would be appreciated. iepkamin
Irene, I believe there are reliable Guides listed in the Spain Guidebook, but I'd have to check. One other possibility you might consider would be to take a Segway tour of the Albayzín and Sacromonte areas. The accompanying Guide will provide a narrative of the history of the Muslim influence there. A small Mosque in that area, which was financed by a wealthy individual from the middle east, opened in July 2003 amid some controversy. Travelling on a Segway is a lot of fun and it sure beats walking! I used THIS firm and would certainly recommend them (their machines have yellow trim, which distinguishes them from some of the others offering similar tours). While in Granada, I'd also highly recommend seeing the Gypsy Flamenco show at Venta El Gallo. I REALLY enjoyed it! Many of the hotels sell tickets or you can also buy them from the Segway operators that I mentioned. The Flamenco show provides transport from hotels and then back at the end of the show. I assume you're planning to also visit the Alhambra? Be sure to buy tickets online well in advance. They're very strict about entry times, so for visiting the Palacios Nazaríes, be sure you're not late! Happy travels!
Thanks
