Grossglockner Road advice

We will be in Salzburg the 2nd week of September. We are traveling from Salzburg to Venice via car? I see us having 2 options the quickest route via highways or taking the Grossglockner road. Can somebody give me an idea of how much time this will add to the drive to Venice? Is it worth it? Should we consider the weather at the time in our decision? Thanks for any input.

Hi Jeremiah,

We drove the Grossglockner from Berchtesgaden area and stayed a night in Heiligenblut on our way tothe Dolomites. We drove it in mid October. The weather in September should not be a problem, but I wouldn't bother at all on rainy day. The road itself can be driven in an hour or less, but it depends on if and how many times you stop along the way. I can't say how much time it would add to your trip though. Hopefully some else can help you there. Have you checked www.viamichelin.com to see what the difference would be?

Jeremiah, we did it the other way, going from Italy to Salzburg. We also stopped for the night at Heiligenblut, i think it would be around 2.5hours extra, plus all the stopping time. It was worth it, really beautiful, we walked on the glacier, we we're lucky we had a pretty nice day, i would not go if the weather was not good. We visited Boston 2 weeks ago, and we really liked it, we hope to go back soon!

We also drove it from Italy and spent the night in Heligenblut. Don't remember how long because we spent some time walking around and eating at the Panorama restauratnt at the Kaiser Franz Josefs Hohe visitors center. We drove it in May and had great weather and hopefully September would be similar for you. In my opinion it is definitely worth the time to drive it and also to take your time for lunch and enjoy the view of the glacier and The Grossglockner peak.
