We will be visiting Vienna in April, and asking for your suggestions on places to eat. What's your absolute favorite and why? Thank you!
Some of our favorites: Indian: Indian Pavilion, (Naschmarkt) Gourmet Indian flavors, like a symphony in your mouth; ask Ashook, the owner, what he recommends that day. Near the Secession Building and you need to see the Naschmarkt anyway. Italian: Trattoria Pizzeria All'Italiana, Landstrasser Hauptstrasse 71 (in the passage near Rochusgasse U-Bahn) Great tagliatelle al limone and mushroom pizzas. Mexican: Los Mexikas (Lange Gasse, behind the Rathaus) Best Mexican restaurant in Vienna. Try their enchiladas rojas and mojitos. Greek: Irodion (at Hainburger end of Rochusgasse U-Bahn stop). Great Haloumi salads and honey-covered Greek yogurt. Hearty Austrian food and great ambiance. Very convenient to the Belvedere Palace. Cafe Central for a relaxing coffee break (on Herrengasse). Beautiful ambiance.
Demel Bakery for pastries (on Kohlmarkt near Hofburg Palace). Tasty food, the building is like a museum and you can watch the artists working. Enjoy!
Admittedly, I get no points for originality because each one of these is overflowing with tourist...but still yummy! #1 - Tresniewski. Great tiny little restaurant listed in the RS book that serves finger sanwiches and little beers. I cannot tell you what a welcome change this was from all the weiners and goulash we had been eating up to that point. #2 - Figmullers. There was a line out the door to get in, but the Schnitzel the size of your head was worth it. Add to it some sturm. Mmmmmmmm. #3 - Cafe Demel is a must for pastries and coffee. The day we were in the Naschmarket we were very short on time. I wish we had eaten at any of the fabulous restaurantst there. Looked great but we had to run to our appointed time for the Opera House tour.
Part of a sentence was somehow deleted from my original post. After the sentence about Irodion's Greek food should be another sentence that went something like this: Oh yes, Austrian: Salm Brau Restaurant near the Lower Belvedere (71 tram from Schwarzenberger Platz, get off at the Belvedere stop and it's right in front of you). It has a great ambiance and hearty Austrian food....
We love a small restaurant, Zum Finstern, where years ago Mozart performed. It is a tiny place and very hard to find because there is no sign on it. It is on Schulhof and located behind the Am Hof. Worth looking for and the food is very good-nice staff too, We have never been there in warm weather but outdoor dining is an option at that time.
Thank you very much, everyone! I'm very excited to try some of these places, wishing I could try them all! ;)
There is a Turkish restaurant not far from the Secession building, right across the street from a Greek restaurant (!) that was by far my favorite eating in the city. The owner is multi-lingual and very charming, and the whole restaurant is non-smoking, a rarity in the city. I will try to find the name & repost.
The name of the restaurant is Etap. The first location is in Josefstadt, but they also opened one up near Karlsplatz & the Opera in District 1. Enjoy!
