Hi, I just discovered this WONDERFUL site! I am going to be in Paris for two nights in September and wonder if anyone has an opinion on this hotel? Thanks, Nanc
Nancy - It's the most well-reviewed hotel on this site. You can use the Search function to find years of comments. Tripadvisor as well.
It suits certain tastes.
Nancy, I stayed at the Grand Hotel Leveque on my last visit to Paris, and had a wonderful time. The rooms weren't "luxurious" but very clean and comfortable, and the staff was great! There are two ATM machines directly across from the Hotel entrance.
As I recall, RS readers get the first breakfast "free", but you'll have to decide if the cost is worth it after that (I believe it's EU$9 at the moment). It's a fairly simple "continental breakfast" but is quite filling (the coffee was excellent!).
Everyone seems to have a "favourite" section in Paris, but I found the Rue Cler area to be a very convenient "base". It's close to the Eiffel Tower, the Ecole Militaire Metro stop and has a lot of wonderful small Cafes and Deli's on the street near the Hotel.
As Kent mentioned, I would suggest getting a reservation SOON, especially for September! They tend to book up fairly quickly. Their website is equipped with charts that show availability of various rooms, a feature that I find quite helpful.
Good luck and happy travels!
We just stayed there in mid June and oh, how we loved the hotel and the area. Rue Cler is pretty much traffic free with wonderful shops and reasonable cafe's. It's a short walk to the Eiffel Tower and the Seine. We will certainly stay there again.
One more thing...
go ahead and pay for their airport shuttle. We saved money by taking the Roissy bus and metro but it was pretty stressful and time consuming after the long flight. I was so wishing we had paid more for their shuttle.
We stayed there in a quiet room on the back for two nights last month, because of the proximity to the Rodin Museum, which was wonderful, the Invalides, and of course, we wanted to hang out near the Eiffel Tower once more. Room was basic but nice, beds comfortable, staff very helpful, (quick to tell us there was a taxi strike) and they also have Internet available for a few Euros. We had the "free with your RS book" continental breakfast on the first morning, and there is a great crepe stand just out the front door.
The Rue Cler is great to visit - but we chose to stay around the corner at the Hotel Royal Phare. People here have pointed out that Rue Cler is very close to the Metro Station Ecole-Militaire. Yes, it is very close, and Royal Phare is positioned right at the entrance to that metro station. It's about a 45 second walk from the hotel's front door to the corner of the street where Rue Cler begins.
Our reasons for choosing the Royal Phare over the Leveque were - cheaper, closer to the metro, quieter, bit closer to Eiffel Tower.
I can still smell those warm Nutella crepes across the street!!
Wife and I can't wait to stay the weekend in Paris at the Leveque during our London vacation. We got a "Superior" room on street side. I think that means it's a little higher and you can see the tip of the eiffel tower from the room.
The main reason we decided on the Grand Leveque was Rick Steves strong recommendation for that hotel, and we liked the idea of a quiet street with no cars at night. Will post a full review when we get home in October!!
Just a caution. No cars at night doesn't necessarily equate with no noise. The street markets set up very early and there are trucks and banging cans. Oh and some noise from the bar on the corner. It's better than being on a boulevard but don't be surprised. I actually liked it.
Pedestrian area like rue Cler just means it's not a major traffic thoroughfare. There are still delivery trucks and garbage trucks and lots of lots of tourists/locals/vendors making noise very early in the morning. I liked the area for eating and shopping, but around the corner at Ecole Militaire Metro is much more convenient.
I look forward to waking up very early in the morning and venturing out on the streets of Paris among the vendors and trucks, sounds great!!
Hi Nancy.. The area is great and you will love it, but my preference is not to stay at the Leveque unless you want to see Americans , Americans , Americans. We prefer the Hotel Champ du Mars.
I was just there a few weeks ago with a room on the front and on the 2nd floor. I had read it could be noisy so I was worried about it but travel with ear plugs. It looked the windows were fairly new and they were those super sound (and I'm sure temp) insulating windows. We never heard anything as long as the window was closed. There was a big difference when we did open the window.
We stayed in 6 different hotels in 3 countries, and every hotel had those same windows. I figure they've had a big push to conserve energy but they also help a lot with the noise.
