Granada to Barcelona - Train or Plane?

We need to get from Granada to Barcelona at the end of October and were hoping to do it in the late afternoon or early evening. Veuling only has 9 AM or 10 PM departures. Spanair doesn't have a schedule available for October but at least for now they have an 8:35 departure. Any comments on Spanair vs. Veuling?

How long would the train take and on what kind of schedule would it run?

Other thoughts?

Thanks for your help.

No, no reason you shouldn't book over their website. I've booked Spanair before over the web with no problems.
A couple of suggestions for the three days south of Sevilla....
Zahara de la Sierra, perched high on a mountain just before you get to Ronda on the Sevilla-Ronda highway...magnificent.
Ubrique....west of Ronda on the A-373...the village is the heart of the leather-craft world in Spain.
Frigiliana, north of Nerja. A Spanish friend of mine described it as "the prettiest village in Spain," and he's not far off the mark.
These may be mutually exclusive, depending on your routing. But if any can be fit into your itinerary, they'd be worth it.

Hmmmm....I have Spanair from Granada to Barcelona on 28 October for 14 Euro for their 11:10 am flight, and 34 Euro for their 8:30 pm flight...probably about 50 Euro in total.
The only other option is the train....a daytime train that takes 12 hours, wasting the entire day, or the overnight sleeper train, where you can get a two-person second-class sleeper for as low as 68 Euro per person. That can be booked up to 62 days in advance.

Knowing what to look for does help, so thank you. I'm not sure what I did wrong last night but it certainly was simple this morning. The evening flight is still only 40 Euro per person - try to get from Toronto to Winnipeg for that! Any reason not to book directly on the Spanair site?

Our trip is getting exciting. We reversed the direction of our loop so that we no longer have problems with where our Mondays conflict with open schedules at various places. So we have 3 nights in Madrid, 2 in Toledo, 3 in Seville (including a Cordoba day trip, 3 nights in the 'pueblos blanca' then 5 nights in Barcelona (including Figueres and Sitges).

Just have to figure out those four nights with a car in the south and we're ready to fly!

Thank you very much for all of your help; it feels like we have a personal concierge who really knows the terrain.

Phil: I agree 100% with Norm..fly, don't take the train. It will add over 10 hours of time to see sites to your day. One thing to keep in mind, I booked my Spanair flight last fall for our trip (next week). Our flight was to leave Granada at 1 pm. When I went back to the website to confirm my details 2 weeks ago, I found that Spanair was cutting their schedule from 4 flights a day to 2, and had moved me to an 8pm departure (cutting into my already skimpy time in Barcelona). Unlike EasyJet, they did NOT notify me, or offer me the chance to select my replacement flight. I called them and was able to move my flight to an 11 am departure (but then had to re-book the Alhambra, and our trip to the Arab baths, etc). I had to eat the extra Alhambra tickets. Still, the flight is less expensive in both time and money. Just be sure to re-confirm closer to your departure date---and have a great time!

Hi Phil- I recommend flying from Granada to Barcelona. You may want to check Iberia airlines, too. They had cheap flights (which I didn't take) when I was in Spain in December. We took the overnight train from Barcelona to Granada which in theory sounds great but it was very hard to sleep on the tiny bunk beds in our first class berth. Plus the tickets were not cheap. I say fly. It will save you time, money, and a day of being exhausted and grouchy!

In the hill towns we stayed in Arcos and in Olvera, which was just lovely!

Enjoy your trip!
