Granada cave dwellings

We're travelling to Spain and will be in Granada for 2 days. Would love to stay in a cave dwelling- seems the only on in Granada city itself only has 4 rooms and is probably sold out. Is it worth it to stay at a cave dwelling hotel several km outside of Granada or should we stay in a hotel in town? Recommended locations/hotels to stay in a fun part of town with kids (12 & 9 yrs)? Thanks!

You need to pick up the Spain guidebook. That will get you started. I have never heard of the cave dwellings but that proves absolutely nothing. Personally we never stay out side of the central city area just as a matter of convenience.

Are you fixed on a hotel, as there are places available for self catering accommodation in caves? I cannot say how many are available, for example through - http://granadainfo.com/apartamentos.htm (n.b. input some dates). Are you referring to Cuevas El Albanico as the hotel in Granada which is booked up? As far as I am aware these are apartments also. If not can you advise for my information. I could not advise whether 'worth it' to stay outside Granada without knowing where you are talking of, but if you only are interested in the city, I do not see any great reasoning for this.

The Cuevas El Abanico DOES look totally cool. Is that the one you tried? Great video on their website. The City of Granada's Tourism Bureau recognizes them, so that's a comfort. Other cave hotels may not have the required permits to operate as a lodging establishment. Also keep in mind that most hotels, hostels, and houses-for rent - the tiny few there are in the Sacromonte (and Albaicin) neighborhood - have inadequate plumbing and so, for sanitary/plumbing reasons, all "used" toilet tissue must be disposed of in a separate container. That is to say, you can't flush the tissue down the drain. That can be a turn-off for some. Another concern may be the area. While beautiful, scenic, and downright quaint in the daytime, this area of Granada has VERY little car traffic at night and even less foot traffic. Safety concerns are constantly being raised about the Sacromonte and adjacent Albaicin. The Sacromonte, at night, is dark. I mean dark dark. Where the "Cuevas El Abanico" is located, seems to be on a footpath, you'll have to walk west to the Cuesta del Chápiz to get a bus/taxi, if needed. If you're renting a car, there won't be anyplace to park it close by. I'm sure your kids, at this age, would be thrilled to stay here. Or, knowing kids, they may also be bored by its seclusion from the rest of the city. GREAT views of the Alhambra, though. For kids, I can't think of any "fun" places in Granada to stay, but maybe near the Plaza Bib-rambla, a big plaza with lots of space, next to the Cathedral, and with a great Morrocan market on the eastern side. This is also within short walking-distance to everywhere in Granada-city you're likely to visit, including bus-access to the Alhambra. Best of luck and enjoy BEAUTIFUL Granada!! I just love it.
