We got to Zermatt this morning (after our flight from JFK to Zurich was delayed three and a half hours!) and the weather is beautiful and we had amazing views of the Matterhorn. It is forecast to be very nice tomorrow too and we are planning take the Gornergrat bahn. On the way back we want to walk down some of the way and I would like some advice on which section would be good to hike, with nice views and no difficult sections. Gornergrat to Rotenboden? Riffelalp to Zermatt? Thank you!!
Gornergrat to Rotenboden will definitely have the best views. From Riffelalp down to Zermatt (actually Winkelmatten) you are mostly in the trees. The terrain coming down from Gornergrat is high and barren, but I don't remember it being steep. We did not hike that section, as it was covered in snow when we were there (early July). But assuming the trail is well marked (as it should be, this is Switzerland!) you should not have any trouble. Hopefully there will still be some flowers blooming. We did hike the section between Riffelalp and Riffelberg (going uphill) and that was pretty nice, although we were hiking in a blizzard so I can't say what the views would be!
Don't know, only skied it. Why don't you inquire at your hotel, I'm sure they'll have good suggestions.
