We're firming up our trip to Europe this fall and will be going from Prague to Berlin. We have an extra day and were looking at staying the night in either Gorlitz or Dresden.
What is everyone's opinion?

If you are interested in seeing probably the most beautiful city in Germany, Dresden is it...stay there. You can see Dresden as a day trip from Berlin, which is a little over 2 hrs. away. I haven't seen Gorlitz yet, I would assume it's more run down...don't know exactly. Part of the city--the eastern half on the east side of the Oder--is now Poland, since 1945. Dresden is roughly mid-point between Prague and Berlin, both being a little over two hours from Dresden...an amazing city.
Dresden is an easy stop between Prague and Berlin. We stopped there when doing the same route. It's a beautiful city with a sad but fascinating history.
My wife and I went to Dresden and Gorlitz in 2006 and 2007,hands down Dresden is the destination, not to miss the new green vault, semper opera house, the fraunkirsche, the zwinger museum complex and aride on the paddlewheelers,if time permits go to August the Strong hunting lodge.Gorlitz czn be seen on a day trip from Dresden as we did,Dresden needs at least 3 days

Dresden, for all the reasons mentioned by pevious posters. I recently requested tourist info via Dresden's website and received it within a week. Most of it is printed in several languages, English included. Instead of going to Goerlitz, I would go to Meissen of porcelain fame if I had time for a day trip. However, with just one day, you'll barely have time to see the high points in Dresden. Incidentally, there is a cheap Europa bus (can't remember the exact name at the moment) from Prague to Dresden.
I don't think you can go wrong with either. We were in both last May and they are both beautiful places. I think we Americans are more familiar with Dresden's history, so it seems like the obvious choice, but I must say we LOVED Gorlitz because it is not at all touristy. Just a beautifully restored German town, where you can walk into Poland too! There were no other English speaking tourists we saw, but the hotel/restaurants could speak at least some English.
