My wife and I will be hopping around Europe for 4 weeks and we are planning 2 nights in Salzburg in mid to late July. I am looking for a nice but simple place in or walking distance to town. We are both teachers, so cheaper is always better. Any ideas? Thank you very much for your help
Last August I stayed at Hotel Rupertus in Freilassing, just across the river in Germany. It's a short walk to the Freilassing Bahnhof and an 8 min train trip into the Salzburg Hbf. There is also a bus from about a block from Rupertus. I know the train fare is €2,10; I suspect the bus fare is the same. Price for a double room with breakfast is €55.
We stayed on the Moosstrasse, too, with Helga Bankhammer. Good sized room, HUGE bathroom, on a working farmhouse. Her info is in Rick's book. It's not walking distance to town, but only a 5 minute bus ride away.
We stayed at Hotel Auersperg in September 2005. We enjoyed it very much. The room was large and comfy; a little bit of a walk to town, but very doable. Can't remember how much it was, but like you, we look for inexpensive rooms. The outside isn't 'grand', but the inside is very nice. Enjoy your trip!
Am Moos on Moosstrasse is a nice and inexpensive place to stay--around 60 euros and it seems to stay booked. The breakfast is great, owners helpful, and bus just outside the door to get you into the Alstadt in minutes. The alps can be seen from the rooms. Parking available in the back--but I have to say we had a bit of trouble finding Moosstrasse--did not have GPS on that trip. Have a fabulous trip to Europe!
Check out the oddly named Best Western Hotel Elefant. It's in the old town & all the sights are right outside the door. No bus or taxi rides necessary. Prices when we were there a few years ago were quite reasonable. Don't let the Best Western name fool you. It's a charming old building. Best Western has bought up a lot of nice older European hotels.
I am going in May and liked what I have heard about the Golden Ente in the old town. I stayed at the Elephant several years ago and liked being in the old town (you won't exactly have great views...you are on very old narrow streets...but you just step outside your door and voila! but you must park a car in large lot on the edge of the old city (and pay). I found the Ente to be much cheaper and just as accessible at Elephant and booked that! But beware the rooms in that area are small! Especially inside the cities.
I really like the Institute San Sebastian. It's similar to a hostel but is really a college dorm. It's clean, quiet, cheap and walking distance from everything. I've stayed by myself in a six-bed dorm room and with my family in two three-bed rooms.
The smallest rooms I've seen were three beds but they seem to be more than happy to let two people have one room to themselves.
we stayed at the Hotel Weisse Taube (white dove) a place many members of my family have stayed over the years. it's close to the Mozart plaza and everything. very Bavarian, cozy rooms and clean, clean bath, big tub.our room looked into an inner court-shaft rather than street,I didn't mind and I'm sure you could request.good breakfast, get there early. not good for driving to tho, if you are arriving by train, take a cab- we had one way streets and construction that had us in circles, this was 3 yrs ago.
My husband and I also stayed at Hotel Weiss Taube in September. We arrived by train and walked to the hotel from the station. Along the way, we visited Mirabell Gardens and ate lunch in Alter Markt.
The hotel is tucked away in Mozartplatz, just a few steps from Salzburg Cathedral. Hohensalzburg Fortress, Mozart's Residence, the old town, and many restaurants are all within walking distance.
Our room on the 4th floor was recently remodeled, had ample space, large windows, and a modern bathroom. The staff was friendly and helpful.
