Good Map for Driving Munich to Bacharach

We're renting a car in munich (after we've stayed in the city a couple of days) and driving from munich to Rothenburg, then Fussen, then Bacharach, and then dropping the car off at the Frankfurt Hahn airport to get a flight to Pisa.
Any suggestions on a good map for that part of Germany? We used a Michelin map for Italy last year and it was pretty good.
Oh- I don't want to purchase a GPS so if you have a suggestion for a map, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks!

For more detail than the Michelin map for all of Germany, buy Michelin 546-Germany-South East and Michelin 543-Germany-Central West. See here: http://tinyurl.com/5dkkly.

Hi Amanda,

Ths past Oct. we drove from Frankfurt via Rothenburg to Munich. We used a Michelin map we bought at Barnes and Noble. My opinion is there's no need for GPS. We've never used one.

Just an observation... from Munich, go to Fuessen then Rothenburg, Bacharach, etc. Much more logical in my opinion.

I agree with earlier posters. We did this trip last year using Michelin map and it worked well. The Munich to Fuessen to Rothenburg to Bacharach sequence makes more sense to me. We terminated this portion of our trip in St. Goar, rather than Bacharach, and loved it. We shortened our planned stay in Rothenburg -- it would be a charming place were it not over run with tourists, but it was.

If you are only driving in Germany, a good Michelin map will be fine. Things are posted well enough that a GPS is not necessary. You can pick it up in Germany for less than you would pay here. You can map your route ahead of time using www.michelin.com before your trip.

I agree with Munich to Fussen, then north through Rothenburg along the Romantic Road or the Autobahn (depending on whether you prefer a fast or scenic ride), West to Bacharach then an short trip into Frankfurt.

rent a car with nav. forget the maps. our little bmw 320d had it and it was fabulous. of course, i made a u-turn in front of the car rental place to go back and ask them to switch it to english! which they did.

I love the Michelin map books for planning the overall drive, but sometimes a GPS is handy when you're looking for a specific destination in towns. I've used both on the same trip in the past. You can easily rent a car with a GPS.

In addition to minimizing getting lost, the GPS helps you find places of interest: let's say you're in village X and need to find a pharmacia--the GPS will locate the nearest 5 or 10 to the location of your GPS, you select one, and it will verbally talk you right to it.

I guess I'm into doing it the "old fashioned" way!

Thanks

We did a very similar drive just last October, rented in Munich, went south to Ruette and then north on the romantic road for a few days and returned the car at the train station in Wurzburg. We used the map they gave us at EuropeCar and it worked just fine. Just know what city is next in the direction of travel and it is very hard to get lost. look for town centers or bahnhofs and you will do great. Half the fun of travel by car in europe is the experience of using maps. I would save the GPS for another day unless you have a specific address to get to and even then you will figure it out. Ask a local and have some fun trying to get where you need to go. HAVE FUN!!
