Good hostel for group in Vienna?

Anyone out there know of a good hostel in Vienna that will take groups? Vienna hostels tend to be more expensive than some other places. We are looking for value. There are 45 in my group of high school musicians and chaperones. Thanks for any sugestions.

Wombats CITY Hostel was great this year. I took a group of 42 students and 10 parents. Book dinner with them - it's cheap and it's actually at a great Austrian restaurant (all wood and charm, lots of locals) a five minute walk from the hostel.

Sara, Hostel Ruthensteiner is great, and the owners are from Whidbey Island! =) (Mixed Austrian/American couple). Nice people. It's close to the train station, and minutes from everything. I don't remember much of the high school set being there, and limited number of showers in the dorm styles rooms (like 1 shower for 17 beds may be an issue). Same with the food facilities - 45 people all at once might push it - won't hurt to call and ask them though, I haven't stayed there in 10 years, but have stayed there 17 days total over the years, and enjoyed the heck out of it.

Check out the Hosteling International Hostels. They are much more connected with the High School age traveling groups, and set up for it. (A little easier to manage a large/young group)You'll usually find more than one group around that age already staying at the hostel which can be nice for the kids.

I stayed at Hostel Ruthensteiner last year and loved it. Wombats seems to cater to the party crowd in my opinion, but it is still a clean, safe place to go. Haven't been to the Wombats in Vienna but the one in Munich so it may be different in Vienna.

Sara,

You might have a look at www.hihostels.com/dba/Hostels-Vienna-list.php?lang=E&city=AT|0072, as they quite often host large groups (from what I've seen in my travels). One of their properties in Vienna has 410 beds, so for a group of 45 that might be your best bet.

As the HI Hostels are a "chain", the facilities tend to be somewhat consistent from one location to the next. Usually a membership is required (which provides slightly better rates and preferred booking), however you might contact them to find out whether they might provide a discount for such a large group.

Good luck and happy travels!

Stayed at Hostel Ruthensteiner last fall and loved it...so convenient to everything. By far my favourite hostel in Europe.

I am so glad to hear so many positive reviews of Ruthenstiener. I feel the same way about it. Great memories from several trips there. The owners, and the crowd were great.

(Still have the concerns about groups I mentioned above.)

If you go with the Hostelling International hostels in Vienna, you can actually get a free group membership at www.hiusa.org/reservations/groups, which will allow you to get the member discounted rate at any HI hostel around the world. Have a fun trip!
