Good Family accomodations near DDay Beaches

We plan to go to Normandy DDay beaches April 1 to 3 with our two boys (ages 12 and 15). Would appreciate recommendations for reasonably priced and nice family accomodations near the DDay beaches. We may rent a car - not sure yet. Thanks in advance for your advice!

Kathy The same words mean different things to different people. What do you mean by "reasonably priced"? Is price, comfort, or location more important to you? The D-Day beaches are over 50 miles long. Do you have an area you want to concentrate on? Have you read the suggestions in the Rick Steves' guidebook yet? Many places are listed with pointers to the best activities.

Yes, I will be more specific. I have been reading Rick Steve's guidebook and it seems like there are many suggestions for hotels (where one can rent single rooms), but fewer suggestions for larger rooms that can sleep four people. So I was hoping to get some recommendations from others who have travelled with their family and found "reasonably" priced ($100-$150 per night) rooms or B&B's that are hospitable to kids. We are flexible as to where we stay in the area at this point. Many thanks for any suggestions!

Hi Kathy, I don;t have my RS guidebook out, but look for "family" or "quad" rooms in his listings. My younger son was 13 at the time and we stayed in Avranches, for no particular reason. I don't know where you will be before or after your DDay beaches visit, and that might affect advice. We rented a car in Paris and enjoyed seeing Honfleur, Bayeux and the tapestry (exceptionally well done audio guide takes about an hour or less- great explanation), several beaches, the American Cemetery, and Mt. St. Michel.
Driving in the area was easy and lovely and we wished we had more time to explore, but we felt we saw a lot.

Kathy: I have visited ' The Beaches ' twice now, and both times stayed at a B&B called "La Ferme du Pressoir" just outside of Villers Bocage, about a 30 to 40 minute drive to Omaha Beach and the American Cemetary. As was previously mentioned, "the beaches" span over 50 miles, but we were able to make several day trips from this B&B (which is on an old farm, run by the descendents of the farmers who built it hundreds of years ago.) They have rooms of varying size, including ones that sleep a family of 4 or 5 comfortably. Prices range from 80 to 110 Euros, depending on how many nights you stay. Hosts are very helpful in helping you plan your days outings, even if they don't speak much English (we never had problems communicating). Breakfast is simple, but plentiful. Having said all this, you will need to have a rental car to take full advantage of this B&B. Check out their website.

When I visited the D-Day beaches I stayed at a nice place in Bayeux called the Hotel Reine Mathilde, it is centrally located, very close to the pickup point for the tours (if you;re taking one) and free parking if you have the car. It is ranked number 2 on tripadvisor for hotels in Bayeux. http://www.hotel-bayeux-reinemathilde.fr/
