Any recommendations out there for good and cheap moules frites in Brussels? I'd rather find a "locals" joint than a fancy place. I'll be staying near Grand Place, so I know I'll probably have to venture out.
I have been down this street many times. They have great food and reasonable prices. If you are early, the tout will offer you a glass of wine or something to entice you to eat with them. http://www.nytimes.com/1983/11/13/travel/along-brussels-restaurant-row.html
Mosselen and frietjes (what my Flemish wife would say) are pretty much the same whether you get them from a "locals joint" or a restaurant that caters mainly to tourists. The only difference is that non-touristy restaurants won't serve the mussels out of season, roughly May-June to September-October. Fries will be the same no matter where you buy them... except McDonalds, perhaps. Frituurs outside the touristed areas will probably have more sauces available and maybe a larger selection of mystery meats.
Most of the restaurants have their menus and prices posted outside. I found the best deals in places that offered moules as an option on the fixed menu.
