Gondolas/Trains in Switzerland

I am planning a trip with my dad to Switzerland. He loves trains, cable cars, and gondolas. Any suggestions which city/cities might be best for that as well as additional sight-seeing? He is 61 and physically well. Thank you!

The mountain villages above the Lauterbrunnen Valley in Switzerland's Berner Oberland. Two to consider are Mürren and Gimmelwald. Here's whyclick hereand here

laura,

You might also have a look at www.schilthorn.ch (which is above Gimmelwald and Murren). It takes four Gondola rides to get there, and from the 10,000 foot level the view is incredible (the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau).

The Piz Gloria restaurant on the top of the Schilthorn was the world's first revolving restaurant. It was also the site where the James Bond movie "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" was filmed many years ago (George Lazenby as James Bond and Telly Savalas as "the bad guy). NO, the building didn't explode!

As your Father is "physically well", perhaps he's like to try Paragliding from Murren (about a 20-minute flight). I'm 55+ and I tried it, so I'm sure your Father could handle the ride.

Happy travels!

If your dad is a train buff, then a visit to the Swiss Transportation Museum in Luzern is a must. Also, Interlaken is home to the official Swiss Rail Museum. It's mostly model trains spread over three floors, but worth a visit.

Also get a Swiss Pass for sure. It covers all of the trains, buses, boats, gondolas, cogwheels, river boats...every kind of public transport. If you go to the privately owned high mountain destination like the Schilthorn or the Jungfrau (Lauterbrunnen Valley area) then the Swiss Pass will give you a hefty discount on those rides...probably enough to pay for itself.

Hi Laura,
You could also consider staying in Wengen in the Berner Oberland. Gorgeous setting! Stayed here 4 nights and loved it.

I'd also suggest a night or 2 in Luzern. The Swiss Transportation Museum was excellent in my opinion.

Thank you everyone for your replies!! I am very excited! I think that Interlaken and Luzern will be real contenders as they have the type of museum that is of great interest to him.
I really appreciate all of the info!!
