Three of us plan to take the Golden Pass Line Lucerne to Montreux on one day in mid July. Will the train/platform changes at Interlaken and Zweisimmen be difficult for an elderly passenger? She can handle some steps but we will each have a large wheelie suitcase to manage. Similarly is the platform easily accessible at Lucerne and Montreux? And is the baggage storage in each train carriage secure? Thank you.
The Golden Pass is a narrow-gauge train...so you don't use platforms to board the carriages. Instead you have to go up a few steps on a small stairway from ground level. At Interlaken you might have to go through a passageway under the tracks to get to your train. At Zweissmann you just walk a few feet; it's a tiny station. Not sure what you mean by secure baggage storage. There is a rack on each end of the carriages to store large bags. If you are concerned about someone walking away with your bag consider buying something like this: http://tinyurl.com/42rjm98
Its your steamer trunks that will exhaust you, not to speak of the elderly lady. If you each have one you will each have to push, pull, lift, and tug it up and down ramps and stairs. It will be much harder to get that on and off the trains than helping the elderly lady on and off. Every kilo you can leave behind is a kilo you don't have to hump up onto the bed, off the bed, unpack, pack, sit-on-to-close-the-steamer-trunk, get up and down stairs, push/pull/lift/tug along cobblestones/ramps/pavements/hills/etc. Have a read of Rick Steves' packing light hints... The stairs up and down from the trains will not be easy, the stations generally are pretty easy, some connections will be tight, lifting the Queen Mary up onto the luggage racks will not be easy. Don't underestimate how heavy the luggage will become the longer you try to deal with it during your holiday. With lots of luggage you might consider paying the extra for First Class so you have more luggage slace.
Thank you for your responses and good advice. We will be packing as light as possible and also intend going first class on the Golden Pass line and getting seat reservations. Thanks again.
