Going to Vienna, Salzburg...maybe Prague

I'm leaving in two weeks to visit a friend just south of Vienna. After visiting for one week, I'm planning on spending another week in Austria, on my own. I thought about taking the train to Salzburg to do some hiking and exploring. I thought about taking the train to Prague for two days before going to Salzburg. It's a 7 hour train ride from Prague to Salzburg. This is only my second trip to Europe so I'm new at this. Does anyone think that Prague would be too much to fit into this trip?

You could do Prague if you're comfortable with taking night trains. Otherwise, you'd be spending your whole time on the train going back and forth.

Thank you, Maureen, for your thoughts. I thought about taking the train from Vienna which is only four hours, staying a night in Prague and then taking the train to Salzburg but it still would be a whole day on the train.

Do you think a better option would be to spend the whole week in Salzburg and take short train trips into other little towns. I'm flying out of Munich to come home, which is only 1 1/2 hour away.

If you're into hiking, there's tons of it around the Salzkammergut region, which is just gorgeous. Check around and see where the trains go. Rick covers Hallstatt in his books, but to see about the other little towns, you'd have to look into Lonely Planet or Let's Go. Also check out the Austrian tourism website, they have brochures about hiking.
