Going to Germany in the Year of the Passion Play

3 of us are planning to visit Germany in June and we are NOT interested in the Oberammergau passion play. Should we go another year? Will it be difficult to get accomodations (particularly in Bavaria?)? Will it be a lot more expensive?

The Passion Play certainly does not affect anything except the area right around Oberammergau. It stretches out over several months as not that many people can see it at once. So an extra 1000 or so people in Bavaria every day will not cause prices to go up or clog up accomodations anywhere. Bavaria is quite large and Oberammergau is just one little town in it.

Thank You. I was hoping that would be the answer.

I traveled in Bavaria for 2 weeks around labor day in 2000, including a week in the western Bavarian Alps, 3 nights in Freilassing and a night in Munich, and I never saw any effects of the passion play.

Outside of Bavaria people hardly realize the passion play even exists let alone takes place in that year. And even in Oberammergau they admit the main audience for the passion play is American tourists. No other nation was so obsessed with it, they say. So don't worry, the world cup e.g. - even though it actually takes place in South Africa - will have a much, much bigger impact on people's lives than the play of some Bavarian village ;-)

If Bavaria has enough excess tourist capacity to absorb almost a million people for Oktoberfest in a period of about two weeks, a few thousand additional tourists scattered over several months will barely cause a blip.

Wow. Lots of confirmation that our June 2010 trip is a GO. Thanks. Just Waiting for Germany 2010 to be at our local bookstore (any day now) before our planning gets into high gear.
