Hello, I am living in Holland right now and in September my family is coming to visit me. There will be 6 of us all together. They are coming for either 10 days or 2 weeks. They will be flying in to Amsterdam and meeting up with me and then we will be traveling from Holland to Italy. We were thinking of renting a car and driving down so we could see more of the scenery on the way (as compared to flying there). I was just wondering for some tips, if this will be enough time? is driving really difficult in italy? any tips would be great! thanks.
This is a matter of personal taste, but I would want to maximize my sightseeing time. Six days in a car (three each way) does not do it for me.
There is lots of great stuff to see in a car between Holland and Italy, but stopping to smell the scenery takes time and you've only got at best two weeks.
Fly.
Driving in Italy is not bad IF you stay out of the cities. Traffic in the cities is most oft a nightmare, and many cities have passed draconian 'zone' laws that rake in millions in tickets and fines from foreign drivers.
I'd agree with the previous poster about flying (unless you really like road trips - it is beautiful!) - at least to somewhere closer to Italy, and then renting a car, or taking the train.
Car rental for 6 adults plus luggage can be rough in Europe availability/price wise, don't trust those "seats 6 + luggage" without researching first. fyi.
We've usually found 4 or more in a car = cheaper than train though.
