I am travelling in a of weeks and would like recommendations on gluten free beer. Has anyone tasted gf beers in Europe? I have looked up some articles online but would like some personal reviews. Thanks in advance. Leaving in 14 days to Paris, bot today on my way to the NWT!
I had to use Google to find the answers. For Belgium, there's a Brasserie de Brunehaut that brews an gluten-free blond ale. I also found some company calling itself "Mongozo" that advertises an organic gluten free pilsner. For Germany, the only specific name I could find was "Schnitzerbräu". I have bought lots of beer in both of these countries, in supermarkets, from distributors and in restaurants. But I have never seen any of the above brands sold in either country, so good luck finding them!
Don't get your hopes up. Gluten-free beer is usually made from sorghum and corn. Sorghum beer is sold in milk cartons in places like South Africa. I tried Anheuser Busch "Redbridge", and it was lame even compared to Michelob (let alone Becks or Heineken, just to name only mass-produced products ... )
Thanks for the advice. I might try some gf beer if it isn't too expensive like it is here. I do love wine, but since I will also be in Belguim, a beer haven, I thought I would try some out. I will post a report if I try some.
Don't know of any gluten-free beers, but in Germany you might want to try a version of apple cider. The name depends on where you are - in the Frankfurt area it's Appelwoi or Abbelwoi, in Swabia it's "Bauernmost" or "most" (but most can also refer to just regular apple juice). Sometimes it's labeled as Cidre.
