I'm working thru the rail options and it looks like a Swiss 1/2 fare card is the way to go for us. We will buy the card when arriving in Zurich. How do I pay for and reserve seating on the Glacier Express without having the 1/2 fare card?
Thank you very much!
Just go to the Glacier Express website (www.glacierexpress.ch) and work through the reservation process for your date and desired train. When you get to the page where you enter your name and age, you will see a little "abo" menu. This is for "Abonndement" or price reductions. Click on that and choose "1/2" from the menu. That will calculate the 50% price reduction for you, whether you choose First or Second class. Note that the Half-Fare reduction is for the fare, but not for the reservation fee. You can reserve and buy this without havein ghte actual Half-Fare card in hand, but you will need it to show on the train.
If you don't want to pay the reservation fee you can take any of the other trains that run over the route. You will possibly have to change trains a few times check on the Swiss Rail web site www.sbb.ch/en. Especially if you don't want to do the whole journey.
Pauline is correct about taking the regular trains on the same tracks as the Glacier Express but you definitely will change trains twice. You don't change trains on the GE. For us, the reservation fee on the GE was 15CHF above our 1/2 fare card.
