Glacier Express and Golden Pass Train

How far in advance do you need a reservation for 6 people? We will be traveling in July 2011. Also, do you really have to purchase a meal when you get your reservation?

Hi Marissa, No worries about reservations. It seems there is always a train or boat or gondola ready to leave when you are, wherever you are. We flew into Geneva airport and got on the Golden Pass train, we had to wait 12 minutes. We stopped in Montreux for a couple of hours and when we got back another Golden Pass train was ready to leave. We then went on to Lauterbrunnen and stayed for a wonderful week in Muerren. Have fun and don't worry about reservations. You will never have to wait long.

For the Glacier Express, you might want to buy your ticket, with reservations at an earlier Swiss train station. And, no you don't have to purchase a meal. You can probably bring your own snacks. However, it's a really long ride. One momento you may want is the small tilted wine glass. You can enjoy a small glass of wine as the train climbs up to the Overlap Pass and your glass of wine will be level.

Thank you for the information. We are going to buy a swiss pass and will get a reservation for the Glacier Express, but won't buy the wine glass as we only carry our luggage as we travel and don't need anything extra.
