How much time should I budget for Giverny? Would like to rent bikes. Please give suggestions for lodging at B&B preferably.
We went to Giverny last July. We took the train, rented bikes at the station and rode to our hotel, visited the gardens had dinner, spent the night and returned. In our opinion there was really not enough to do/see to warrant an overnight stay. The gardens and house do not take that long to view (for us anyway).
We stopped in Giverny for a couple of hours on our drive from Paris to Rouen. It was very busy and still 2-3 hours was ample time to see everything. A very beautiful spot!
Last June we stayed in Les Andeleys. You can visit King Richard's Castle late afternoon of the day you arrive there. The next morning drive to Giverney about 30 minutes before it opens. (It is closed one day, Monday I think.) We did the water gardens first because they get more crowded, then the rose gardens and Monet's house. Three--four hours is enough time. It is a very crowded place; not too many opportunities even in early June to savor a quiet corner. You can then leave, heading on to your next sight--Rouen or Honfleur are not too far away and continue the Impressionist theme.
