Hi all,
We are planning to go to Giverny (Monte Garden) & Rouen on the same day in Oct. We will take the 8:00am train leaving Paris to Giverny, how many hours do we need to see the whole thing in Monte Garden? On the voyages-sncf site, there is discounted train ticket leaving Rouen at 9pm for 10 Euro and will be back in Paris around 10:15pm. Because it gets dark early in Oct. Is Rouen a safe city to walk around in the evening/night? Or should we take earlier train back to Paris? to get the discounted 10 Euro ticket, do we need to book the ticket online in advance? thanks!
Prem's fare tickets are for a specific departure date and time and are non-exchangeable and non-refundable. You can book them up to three months in advance on voyages-sncf.com. If you wait to buy tickets in Paris, you'll pay full fare.
Giverny is definitely worth visiting, but even in prime season (late May), I felt that an hour or an hour and a half at the site was plenty. Not sure what will be blooming in October, but I still think it would be worthwhile. Be sure to coordinate with when the shuttle bus runs to get you back to the Vernon train station - that might be the hang-up for getting on to Rouen in a timely manner.
I spent a semester at a school in Rouen, the city is perfectly safe to walk around in the evening (even super late at night) the churches are really beautiful lit up at night. There are a lot of bars in the main town and with the no smoking laws a lot of people are outside and they have heaters, no matter what time of year it is.
