Gites in southern France

I am looking for a vacation rental in southern France for April/May 2011. I have found some in Avignon, Arles and Aix en Provence. My wishes are for a smaller town, on a rail line, so I can explore the area by train yet have access to a larger city where I can also rent a car. Does anyone have any experiences that may help in my search? I have gone through Gites de France and similar sites but sometimes have trouble telling whether the town has rail service. Thanks for any help or suggestions you have.

Most towns have tourism offices on lines. Search on "tourisme "city name" and they usually include the available public transportation for the town - bus or rail.

I think you do not need to constrain your choices in this way.

If you are going to rent a car, do so when you arrive and drive it to the small-town gite of your choice.

I didn't think about the tourism office....thanks. I plan to be there for three weeks... I wasn't sure I wanted to rent a car for that long a time. Thank you both for your input.
