what hotels do you recommend for vienna, salzburg, and hallstatt? How many days do you recommend we stay in each? we will be there for 7 or 8 days

Do you have any of RS Guide Books that cover those areas yet? If so, great.
If not, I would suggest you get some as they certainly have helped us plan our monthly visit to Europe every summer.

I too suggest you getting one of Rick's guides. In Vienna, I prefer to stay at K&T Boardinghouse. They now have two clean B&B's in the best location in town. And the price is fantastic for Vienna. You can Google them. In Salzburg, there are many, many B&B's available with the nicest hosts. Look into Rick's Graffiti Wall in the Heroic B&B section to see if any names pop out. You can always look into AirBnB.com, Hotels.com, Booking.com and even Craigslist.com for accommodations. I have not stayed in Hallstatt, so I cannot be of help there. 7 or 8 days is pretty short for 3 locations, especially when there's so much to see in Vienna and Salzburg. I'd say 4 days in Vienna and 2 days in Salzburg with the balance elsewhere.
