We are a family planning on staying in Gimmewald this summer and taking the tram to the top of the mountain. we are traveling in car to thisarea. Does anyoen know the cost of the tram trip from Gimmewald and are they any discounts with cards, et
According to rail.ch, the standard one-way fare is 100chf. For discount information, click the "railpasses" tab above for all your options.
Swiss Pass covers 100% Lauterbrunnen to Gimmelwald and Gimmelwald all the way to Wengen. 25% discount from Wengen all the way to Jungrau. Half Fare card gets 50% discount on entire trip.
Its not a tram but a train. Google Jungfraubahn and the official site has all the prices. You will need to go back down to Lauterbrunnen to connect to the train.
"taking the tram to the top of the mountain" As NIgel poins out, to Jungfraujoch you take a train, not a tram (cablecar). Or do you mean to th etop of the Shcilthorn? That is a cablecar ride right up from Gimmelwald. If you go to the JUngfraujoch, you would first take th ecablecar down from Gimmelwald, a bus to Lauterbrunnen, and the train up from there. You change at Kleine Scheideggg, and fater that the train goes into a tunnel for the rest of the journey. This is an expensive journey. You can get an early morning tickeet for a reduced fare, or discounts with the various Swiss passes. The best discount is with a Half Fare Card, which will give a 50% discount on the whole trip. The Half Fare card costs 99 CHF per person.
Adding to the above answers, the RT fare for the journey from Lauterbrunnen to the Jungfraujoch is close to $187. Even the best Swiss Pass doesn't cover the entire fare. The 1/2 fare card can be useful here. It costs 99CHF and is good for 30 days. Yes, it does cost 198CHF ($206) for two people but the full fare is about $374. Note also that the travel time on the cog train from Lauterbrunnen is 2hrs up and then 2hrs back down. You do change trains at Kleine Scheidegg.
And your kids < 16 years go free with you to Gimmelwald and Jungfrau on all Swiss Transports if you buy a Junior Card for them ~ 20CHF
Catherine, As Lola mentioned, could you clarify whether you're referring to the Schilthorn (Piz Gloria and the James Bond revolving restaurant) which is made by a series of Cable Cars (three from Gimmelwald) or the Jungfrau trip which uses a train departing from Kleine Scheidegg? Both will be a bit on the "pricey" side, especially with a family but the trip to the Schilthorn will probably be the least expensive. I didn't check specific costs for each of the trips, but all the information on costs and pass discounts are listed in the Switzerland Guidebook (I'd highly recommend packing the book along, as it will be excellent reference if required). Happy travels!
Yes I do mean the Schilthorn. We will be staying in Murren and looking for a reasonable way to get to the top. We are renting a car for our travels so not elgible for the 50% from a rail pass. We are 2 adults with 2 children ages 10 and 12 Thank you everyone for your advice
Catherine, Thanks for the clarification. A few further questions... How long are you planning to stay in that area, and are you planning to ride only the Schilthornbahn, or other lifts in the area as well? You'd have to do some "number crunching" to determine whether a Swiss Saver or Flexi Pass would provide any benefits over using individual tickets on the Schilthornbahn. The lifts are somewhat expensive (as are many things in Switzerland), but I believe the first run in the morning is discounted. I consider the Schilthornbahn & Piz Gloria to be somewhat "unique" travel experiences, so just resign myself to the cost. If you have a meal in the Revolving Restaurant and enjoy the views of the Eiger, Monch & Jungfrau, it's a nice way to spend a few hours. If you're adventurous, you could make it a really memorable visit and Paraglide from the Schilthorn back to Stechelberg (which would save at least one return fare on the Schilthornbahn). I assume that activity is still available? Cheers!
The cableway to the top of the Schilthorn is in Murren. If the top is clouded in, you will disappear in the clouds. Its really neat This happened to us and we couldn't even see the docking area until we were a few feet from it. The clouds form suddenly and they clear just as suddenly. The RT fare from Murren is about $70 for each adult. The children can ride free with a youth card. Since you are driving, a Swiss pass won't do you much good unless you will be going up to the top of the Jungfrau. You can park your car in the large parking lot at the cableway station in Stechelberg and then ride up to Gimmelwald and then to Murren.
The view from the top over the glacier is fantastic; also the stops within the tunnel are interesting. At the top (in seaon?) there are fun touristy things to do, to make the trip even more worthwhile- its not just up and back
Note that Brian is talking about the train to the Jungfraujoch. The train tunnel goes right through the Eiger in into the Jungfrau.
