Gimmelwald in May

Hello. We are planning a Europe trip for next May, and expect to be in the Gimmelwald area about mid month (16th give or take a day or two). What do you think the odds are the weather will be agreeable for some hiking? And, if hiking is out, is the area still worth visiting? Many thanks.

Will there be snow at Gimmelwald's elevation? Most likely, no. Will there be a lot of fog, mud and rain? Most likely yes. Some people have no problems with that, for others, that seems to be a deal breaker. Mid-May isn't the best time to visit, but not the worst either.

We've been to Gimmelwald three times in second, third, or fourth week in May. Each time it has been sunny and warm by British standards, probably bloody cold for some warm blooded Americans, and we always enjoy seeing the farmers harvesting the first hay. YMMV. Nobody can predict what winter or spring weather will bring.... (our way to deal with the inevitable rainy days is to do indoor stuff or go to the valleys or jump a train)

Thanks so much. You are so encouraging. I hate the thought of "wasted"days, but also hate the thought of being so close to the Alps and not getting to see them! I guess the key is to be ready to change plans!

I was there in May of 2008. What a wonderful time to go. The weather was absolutely perfect, 70s and clear blue skies. The weather forecast we read just a few days before called for snow and highs in the 30s. What a pleasant surpise to find perfect weather. Not everything is open and not all trails are accessible but you will not find many tourists and have the place to yourself. The tulips were all in bloom and the grass was very green. I would recommend staying in Murren instead of Gimmelwald because you will find more choices for amenities.

We usually have good luck in May; grass is very green, wild flowers are starting; great time to be in Europe- I even find London is fresh in May
