My hubby and I traveled to this lovely place 20 years ago. We are planning to go to switzerland again, this time with our 3 boys in tow! We want something like gimmelwald but maybe not as rural....what would you ssuggest? Appreciate your thoughts!
Lisa, how old are your toys? Teens will enjoy different things from toddlers.
Sorry...they are 17, 15 and 10..boys.
Muerren which is one cable car station up from Gimmelwald, or a 20 to 30 minute walk uphill may answer the call. The lads may like the mini-golf at the sports centre at the other end of the village, the funicular up to Almendhubel - and walks from the top, including the flower walk, and fantastic food on the terrace with incredible views. We love it. We just thought about Gimmelwald on the next trip but I think we prefer a little more around us.
Excellent. Mürren, just up the hill from Gimmelwald, has the same alpine setting and views, but is an actual town. Our teen boys liked it a lot, expecially the hiking and the large outdoor chess set. Our first visit coincided with a Dorfest (parade and other activities) which was great. Chalet Fontana has a 2-brd. apartment that would accommodate five. Wengen across the valley is also nice. Or for lots of action and activites, try Grindelwald in the next valley. RS writes this off as "too touristy" and it is true there are tourist buses there. But the views of the mountains are spectacular, and there are lots of activities to engage teens-the Rodelbahn or summer luge at Pfingstegg, the Trotti-Bike rides downhill from the First lift, and hikes with incredible views. Hotel Residence has a 2-bed. apartment that is huge (by Swiss standards) and moderately priced. Lots of other apartments there as well, but some are only by the full week. Outside the Berner Oberland, places we have enjoyed with active teen boys include Bettmeralp, Kandersteg, Zermatt, and, in France, Chamonix. .
How about Grindelwald? It where most people who aren't Rickites go in the BO, anyway.
Flumserberg. Like Murren and Gimmelwald, it sits at a high elevation, but you can drive your car there. Parts of Lech am Arlberg in Austria also are located on the side of a mountain, but not so high off the valley floor as Flumserberg, Murren or Gimmelwald.
Like the others I am a big Murren fan. We came with our 2 teens and had a wonderful time. We also stayed at the Chalet Fontana and our apartment was ideal. A Queen or double bed in the main area with a view or the Alps. Nice kitchen, and the bedroom in the back had three seperate beds!!! Denise, the host was awesome and gave us wonderful advice on hiking routes. Have a great trip.
We just got back from 3 days/nights in Murren, just a few minutes from Gimmelwald. It's a small town, but quite a bit more action than Gimmewald. Lots of hotels and restaurants and GREAT views.
