Gift for a Family

My son will be staying with a family in Madrid for 5 months as part of a study abroad college program. We would like to send a gift. Any suggestions?

European families usually appreciate receiving maple syrup - maybe a couple of pint containers of it.
All the best in the study program. P.

It would be better if he took the gift when he goes, rather than sending it ahead. You might consider something that is produced in your area, such as candy or craft items, or a nice book with pictures of your state. They most likely won't be expecting a gift, though. My friend in Spain, whom I visited in May, said that such gift-giving isn't customary there. But they loved the things I took for them, particularly the things I brought for their daughter.

I always try to bring an inexpensive lithograph, drawing, or art-type photo of a typical scene in my part of the world....a famous landmark, a country scene, or similar....so they can display it in their home if they desire. It's easy to pack (between a couple of pieces of cardboard at the bottom of the suitcase) and will remind them of me every time they see it.
