Getting to Hallstatt - Alternatives to Ferry

Is there any other way to get to Hallstatt from Obertraun besides the ferry. We will be getting there late in the day via train, reportedly after the ferry quits for the day. Is there a bus, taxi, or other that we can travel by land? I know there is a bus from Bad Ischl (sp?). Maybe we just spend the night in Obertraun...any hotel suggestions?

I appreciate the help and someday I hope I can return the favor.

Thanks,

Lloyd

Lloyd,

What time of day were you planning to arrive at the Hallstatt rail station? Is there any possibility of changing your schedule to arrive a bit earlier?

Stephanie operates until early evening. Have a look at www.hallstattschifffahrt.at/090c4f0d55b7a3c85d51314bd0602196/english/timetable/index.html for times and details.

If you travel by road (Bus or Car), you'll arrive on the same side of the lake as the town, so the boat times won't be a concern.

If you're planning to depart from Hallstatt to your next stop via rail, I'd suggest buying your ticket before arrival in Hallstatt as the small rail station there doesn't seem to be staffed at all.

Hope this helps? Good luck and happy travels!

We'll be getting there aroun 7 pm in Obertraun. Does the train run directly to Hallstatt?

Lloyd,

The train DOES run directly to Hallstatt (sort of). The small train station is across the lake from the actual village of Hallstatt, so that's why the boat is required.

I believe Stefanie makes the last run of the day at about 18:55, so it doesn't sound like that will be an option for you.

As the previous post indicated, given the short distance from Obertraun to Hallstatt you might consider using a Taxi. I've never travelled that route, but doubt that the cost would be prohibitive for that short distance.

Good luck!

Does the train actually stop there that late? If so, are you sure the boat won't be running then?

The train "station" is essentially a cabin in the woods, across the lake from town, with nothing else around. There's no place to go from the train station (and no way to get there) unless the boat comes to ferry you across the lake (unless I missed some footpath through the woods).

Something about this doesn't add up. I'd double check your info. I'd be pretty surprised if the train dropped people at the Halstatt "station" at a time when they couldn't take the ferry across..I believe they would be stranded there.

We have a similar question... It looks like there's a train that leaves Hallstatt station on Sunday June 17th around 8:05am, before the first ferry leaves at 8:50am. I've seen it's about a 7 minute drive to the train station from Hallstatt...basically, what are the chances of getting a cab that early in the morning in a small town like that? Thanks in advance!

The next stop after Hallstatt Bahnhof is Obertraun, at the south end of the lake, and there is a bus from there to Lahn, on the same side of the lake, 1 km south of Hallstatt. There are parking lots in Lahn, and from there to Hallstatt is a pedestrian only zone. It looks like there might also be a boat from Lahn to the center of Hallstatt, but I don't know the schedule. There are also buses from Bad Ischl, on the train line, to Lahn. The bus might stop at the open plaza between tunnels above Hallstatt, but it would be a long, step walk down steps into town - definitely not something you would want to do with a rollaboard. The Austrian Rail website, www.oebb.at, will show the bus schedule from Bad Ischl or Obertraun to Lahn. In 2009, I found convenient lodging in Lahn, so I used the bus from Bad Ischl since it avoided all the problems noted here. When I left I was going by train to Innsbruck via Stainach-Irdning, so I took the bus around to the Obertraun station.
