Getting to Granada from Rome

I am traveling from Rome to Granada. I was planning on flying into Madrid but was wondering what is best after that: flying or taking the train to Granada. I have searched around a little bit to see how the logistics of this would work but wasn't that successful.

Any help is appreciated.

Lisa,
Vueling flies direct from Rome to Sevilla and Malaga which gives you some other options. You may be able to go one of those routes, unless your plan was to also spend time in Madrid. Of course you're still going to have to get to Granada from there.
Wikipedia is pretty good for listing the airlines and cities they fly directly into many of the airports. See here:

Train travel between Madrid and Granada is a long haul...about 4:45....not a fast train, at least, not yet. But it's not much longer than the flight, when you consider getting out to Barajas airport early enough, clearing security, etc. Spanair flies Madrid-Barcelona, and you can get some good fares if you book early enough. You can book rail tickets in advance at www.renfe.es (change to English in the lower left). I actually prefer the bus along that route, about 5 hours, and about 1/4 the rail cost...16 Euro o/w! Check www.movelia.es for bus fares and schedules.
