We'll be traveling in Spain for 2 weeks, but need to get our son up to Barcelona for summer school. Will it be best to take a train from Nerja or Granada and stay over in Valencia for a night and then on to Barcelona, or is there a fast train straight up to Barcelona?
As far as I am aware, Nerja does not have a train station. There are trains from Granada to Barcelona -they appear to take 11.5 - 12 hours - some are during the day, some are overnight. So would not appear to be fast. Check www.renfe.com - click on welcome to see it in English.
You'll need to travel by bus from Nerja to Granada for the train to Barcelona. After researching the Granada-Barcelona leg of my trip with my grand-daughter last summer, I decided on a late afternoon flight. It cost a little, but not a lot, more than the train, and it saved many long hours of tiresome travel--to say nothing of adding an overnight in another city. Airport transportation in both Granada and Barcelona is convenient and affordable. Enjoy!
For cheap flights throughout Europe, check www.skyscanner.com. I just organized a flight for clients from Granada to Barcelona. Flights were about $125 pp on Vueling/Iberia. Prices fluctuate a Lot! Just read the fine print for baggage / carry on restrictions, price for seat assignment, etc. This airline also has inexpensive flights from Barcelona to Paris.
