We are doing a med cruise and after cruise want to travel to Munich and Salzburg from Rome. We have 8 days is it possible to do this by train or would it be better to fly from Rome to Munich.

Terry, I briefly checked a few Rome-Munich flights, but the prices seemed to be in the area of about €650 PP. Therefore travel by train would probably be the best option on that route. The train that I'd use on that route is a departure from Roma Termini at 09:25, arriving Munich Hbf at 18:25 (time 9H:00M, one change at Bologna Centrale, reservations compulsory on both legs). The advantages with that train are only one change and about the shortest travel time possible on that route. You'd be in Munich in time to check-in and then go for a fine hot meal. You can check the bahn.de website to see other train options. Happy travels!

German Wings airline has a couple flights daily Rome -Munich. On some random days in June and July 2013 that I put in rates were 160-180 Euro per person-4 hr flight. That would be my first choice for quickest, easiest to get straight there. If you are looking to stop along the way in Pisa, Venice, etc. then train is the preferred travel method.

Thanks everyone for the good information. Yes we like to stop along the way so probably will take train.

Terry, One point to note about flights from Rome to Munich. I did look at Vueling, but I believe those are indirect flights (ie: layover in Barcelona or elsewhere), so that's why I didn't suggest that option. Although it's a bit of a long day, the train would still be my choice on that route. Cheers!
