Do any trains run to Harburg from Munich? My husband and I will be visiting Munich in May. Neither one of us is willing to drive, and wed rather not do a tour as we'd like to spend a night in one of the towns. I understand that the train takes about 4 hours to get to Rothenburg, but does it stop in Harsburg?
Harburg is not on the rail line from Munich to Rothenburg. Harburg is on a line that goes from Augsburg to Donauwörth to Harburg to Nördlingen, and from there west into Baden-Württemburg. Using only the train, you would have to backtrack (11 min) to Donauwörth and continue on from there to Rothenburg. However, there are also periodic buses from Nördlingen to Rothenburg.
Incidently, there is no public transportation from the Harburg Bahnhof to the town and to the castle, but it is not a real long walk. Also, there are no lockers in the station. I am visiting there in October, after doing some sightseeing earlier in the day in Donauwörth. I will leave my bag in a locker a Donauwörth and take the train to Harburg, then come back later for my bag.
Actually, that is probably the most interesting part of the Romantic Road - Donauwörth, Harburg, Nördlingen, Dinkelsbühl, and Feuchtwangen. You might want to spend a few days seeing those towns.
