Getting from Germany to Italy

what is the best route to take from Bacharach,Germany to Rome? We have 3 days and two nights to do it. Orinally we wanted to take the train so we could see more sights. Flying has been recommended by some as a time saver, but, I would like to travel a day or two and stop part way to break up the trip. Any suggestions?

Your logical rail route will take you through Frankfurt, Freiburg, Basel, Bern, Speiz (side trip to interlaken), Milan, Florence. So I'd pick one or two spots you'd like to make a short visit and plan that way.
