Getting from Gare du Nord to Gare de l'Est

Tentative plans have me changing trains between Gare du Nord and Gard de L'est in Paris. I have 1 hour and 15 minutes between trains?

Has anyone walked between the two? Is it simple? How far is it? (i'll only have a convertible carry-on) Or should I just take the metro one stop. I've walked all over Paris but not this neighborhood so I'm not familiar with it. If it's a nice area I wouldn't mind walking. If not much to see, I'll metro.

It's an easy walk. Maybe 5 minutes?? Busy, some bums, not particularly scary in my experience. We stayed in a 2-star place 1/2 block from Nord and found it okay.

Russ is right. Slightly seedy area, but you can safely walk from one station to the other. I have done it often.

If you give yourself 5 minutes for the walk, that is ample time. There is a map at the exit from Gare du Nord, showing the route. Turn left leaving Gare du Nord, go about 3 - 5 blocks to a set of stairs, go down the stairs and you are at Gare de l'Est.

Exit Gare du Nord on rue Dunkerque (front of the station) turn left and follow to the end of the street to rue d'Alsace turn right. The tracks to Gare de l'est will be on your left - watch for the stairs. Entrance will be to your left.

If you are walking during the day there should be no problem. Not necessarily a bunch to see (no park, no specific monument) - but it is a main transportation area in Paris with Parisian buildings sprinkled about, cafes etc. Stretch your legs take a walk.
