After our cruise my husband and I will have about 8 hours to spend in Rome before our flight. What's the best way to spend our day and then get to the airport ? I hear our 2 large suitcases can be STORED AT THE TRAIN STATION. Any info on this would be appreciated. We've been to Rome before but this is the first time we will be on our own to make arrangements.
First, the Civitavecchia train station is just over a mile from the ship. There are tons of people departing the ship at almost the same time and there are cabs waiting. Unfortunately, the cab drivers want the fare into Rome not the one to the train station. Expect resistence there. Second, there is a shuttle from the ship to the port entrance. The train station is about 4-5 blocks from there. For maximum time in Rome, you might want to invest in the taxi.
Second, if you do decide on the train, there are up to 3 trains an hour departing Civitavecchia for the main Rome terminal. The journey can take up to 1.15hrs depending on the run. You can find staffed luggage storage near the tracks where the Leonardo Express departs for the airport.
When you are ready for the airport, retrieve you luggage and jump on the Leonardo Express to the airport. If your flight is international, get there at least 2hrs in advance to clear security.
