Getting from Brussels to Normandy (Rouen) and visiting Normandy

What is the best (reasonable) way (public transportation) to get from Brussels to Normandy? Is there some direct way or must we go to Paris to transfer trains? If by train, how early should we make reservations? (We are going in October.)

We are considering renting a car in Rouen for our Normandy visit. Good idea? Any thoughts on rental agencies? Our time in Normandy is pretty flexible. How many days should we allow and besides the War museums and beaches, what are the "must sees?" (Bayeux and Mont St. Michel are on our list.) We are also considering a bit of the coastline of Brittany and Dinan.

To get the best fare for Brussels-Paris, book ASAP (up to 90 days allowed) at www.thalys.com. A Smoove fare can be as low as 25.00 EUR. The standard 2nd class fare is 88.00 EUR.

The ride on the RER E from Magenta (attached to Gare du Nord) to Haussmann - Saint-Lazare (close by Gare Saint-Lazare) takes 4 minutes and the current fare is 1.60 EUR. (If there is a fare increase, it will take effect on 1 July.)

Actually, booking in advance (up to three months allowed) at www.tgv-europe.com can get you a Prem's fare as low as 10.00 EUR for Paris-Rouen. The standard 2nd class fare is 20.50 EUR. To keep the site in English and to avoid being bumped to the Rail Europe site which doesn't offer discount fares, choose Great Britain as your country of residence.

I recommend autoeurope.com. You can pick up a car at the Rouen-Rive Droite train station.

Unless you're going to spend some time in Rouen itself (like visiting the cathedral), you could take the train from Paris to Caen and pick up a car at the train station there.

The standard 2nd class fare for Paris-Caen is 31.20 EUR. The best Prem's fare is 23.00 EUR. Trains to Caen also depart from Gare Saint-Lazare.

Many people on this board highly recommend Battlebus for tours of the Normandy beaches. Battlebus requires that you spend the night before a tour in Bayeux or close by.

The easiest way will be to go to Paris, Gare du Nord, and transfer to Gare St Lazare (it's easy, there's even a direct RER between the two). You should try to reserve early for the Brussels-Paris part (which you can do starting about 3 months in advance I think), but Paris-Rouen will be the same price no matter when you buy it(around 20 euros for adults), so it may be worth waiting and buying it at the station so you have more flexibility. I take that train all the time and have never needed to have a ticket in advance.

I'm useless when it comes to how/where to rent a car, but I know there are places to do it in Rouen, and for the trip you want to do it's probably a good idea. In Brittany, I love St. Malo and Dinan (and if you time it right, there's actually a fun British film festival in Dinan, the 6th-10th October this year I think).

The other places you've mentioned sound good, and if you want a couple more possibilities, maybe Honfleur and the cliffs of Etretat.

Although frankly all that is A LOT, it depends on how much time you really want to spend in Brittany and Normandy!
